The following is an extract from my article, "In Seach of Banner Shields," published in the Polk County [TN] Historical and Genealogical Society Quarterly and Newsletter, vol. 5, no. 2 (August 1999).

Sevier County SHIELDS Family
The SHIELDS family of Sevier County, Tennessee seems to be distant relatives of Banner. The connection is through the four sons of William SHIELDS, great-grandfather of William of Frederick Co., MD. This William SHIELDS was born 1600 in County Antrim, Ireland and died in 1655, a victim of “Cromwellian persecution.” The four sons were Daniel (killed at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690), William, James, and John (the youngest, b. about 1645, probably in County Antrim, and the grandfather of William of Frederick Co.). William and James were deported to Barbados and eventually made their way to Virginia; each of them was the progenitor of a large SHIELDS family in America. William of Armagh, at the age of nine, found a home with the descendants of James in New Castle, Delaware when he arrived as an orphan in 1737 (Willis, p. 1). For information on the SHIELDS family of Sevier Co. see Olga Jones Edwards, The “Connection” in East Tennessee, p!
p. 244-47. “The SHIELDS family moved to Sevier Co., Tenn. about 1784,” says Edwards. “It seems that several branches of this family moved to E. Tenn. In 1916 John Arthur Shields published “The Shields Family History.” This has been used as a authority on the Shields family since that time. The following Shields data is from the census records, tombstone inscriptions, “The Shields Family,” and research by Mary Shields Shore of Rockville, MD.” The first SHIELDS in Sevier Co. was Robert SHIELDS, b. 1740, who came to the Middlebrook community from Augusta Co., VA in 1784. He m 1761 Nancy STOCKTON of Albemarle Co., VA, dau. of Richard STOCKTON. Robert’s son Richard SHIELDS (1764-1825) is believed to be the father of Robert SHIELDS (1784-1850) who m. Margaret EMMERT (1788-1862) and moved to Cades Cove in Blount Co. and Arnett SHIELDS who m. Mary EMERTand also lived in Blount Co. Six of the children of Ro!
bert and Margaret SHIELDS moved to Murray Co., GA. Two that I found in the 1850 Murray Co. Census were Joshua SHIELDS b. 1810 m. 7 Feb 1834 Sarah JOHNSON and O. C. Perry SHIELDS b. 14 Sep 1815 d. 5 Feb 1886 m. 28 Jul 1841 Peggy GREER.
The fact that Robert SHIELDS came from Virginia (rather than Maryland) into east Tennessee would suggest that he is of the SHIELDS family that came to Virginia via Barbados. Edwards continues the Sevier Co. SHIELDS line through the 1860s. Two other sources on this SHIELDS line are “Families of Cades Cove 1821-1935” (1998) and “Descendants of Robert and Margaret Emmert SHIELDS of Cades Cove (1986), both by Dr. Randolph SHIELDS.
