McCubbins did extensive genealogical work primarily in the Carolinas. From
a film of his handwritten records I have made notes of the various
Shirey/Schuerers mentioned. I did not record his notes in their entirety,
but hope this will give someone a clue for further research.

The State Grants (#798 at 50 shilling, the 100 ac) to John Shiver....
John Shires Bk. 10, page 286 July 16, 1785 (a German and no wife signs)
lets Wm. Bodenhamer....both of Rowan Co., NC....500 ac on Hambees Cr and both
sides Stoney Run....
James Augustin Brown Scherer born in Salisburg, NC 22 May 1870
Jacob Daniel Scherer b. 1730 (2nd son of Nicholas Sherrer of the Rhine
Palatinate) came to Philadelphia, PA in the "Richard and Mary" in 1752
changed the orginal Swiss spelling of his name "Scherrer" to Sherrer, settled
in Berks Co., PA; removed to Guilford, NC: was a minute man in American
Revolution, married Hannah Sophia Dick
Frederick Sherrer (born 1763) a pvt. in 1st NC line of American Revolution
and was severely wounded in service; married Barbara Smith
Rev. Jacob Sherrer b. 1785 adopted the present spelling of name "Scherer",
was a Lutheran minister in 1810 m. Elizabeth Moser.
