Lisa:
I'm not sure there's any proof of John Shoemaker's (who married Sarah
Jerrett) birth date. I've seen it estimated variously as 1730, 1732 and
1735. However, the death date I listed in my message (1797) was wrong, as I
believe he did not die until after 1820.
You indicate that he had 8 children. John had 8 children listed in the
Douglas Register in Henrico County, Virginia, your William being the last
one listed. However, records indicate that at shortly before William's
birth the family moved to North Carolina. I show three other sons born to
John and Sarah, after the move to North Carolina, so they were not shown in
the Douglas Register. You mention John, Jr. born 13 Dec 1761. He was
killed in the Battle of Eutaw Springs in the American Revolution in 1781.
My John (see end of message) was born in 1782, and it was not unusual for
parents who lost a child to use that name again for a subsequent child.
This might have been even more likely for a namesake, like John, Jr.
I have no clear proof of the connection of my John to John Shoemaker and
Sarah Jerrett, although circumstances and family name similarities (such
Calvin in your line and mine) indicate a strong likelihood that John and
Sarah were his parents.
I've never actually seen Shoemaker Pioneers, although someone sent me a
transcript of one section once. I believe that my John is in the book. Does
it list parents for him?
Any information that anyone can add would be appreciated!
