Jean,
There was a Maria Appolonia Shoemaker born in Frederick County MD June 24, 1747
to Peter Shoemaker and Eva Catherine. She married a Joannes Kuester on March
23, 1769 in Frederick County MD. Since you state that your Marie Appolonia was
in Rockingham County this can not be the same person. You do not state a time
period when you know she was in Rockingham County but if it was around 1790
then she either belongs to the Martin Shoemaker line or the Simon Shoemaker
line. Both families were in the Brock's Gap area. By 1807 Simon is out in
Adams County OH so if the recording is after this date she probably belongs to
the Matin Shoemaker line. I have some information on the Simon Shoemaker line
and see nothing there on her.
You have the name Appolonia in caps which would indicate to me that that is the
way she is recorded in the record you are looking at. If this is the case then
her first name was probably Appolonia and not Marie. Some German families held
on to German naming practices when they first came over to this country. Names
like Hanns, Johann, Maria etc where "church names" and not used other than for
baptism. So for example Hanns Jacob Schumacher is really Jacob Schumacher.
Wonderful how our ancesters loved to play with our minds.
