I recently returned from Portugal. In the southern Algarve region we
visited the ancient town of Silves. This was originally a Roman settlement
and is still an important southern town. It has a castle that dates back
before moorish times, that is really what we would call a fort. It was
once a seaport and a walled city. We also discovered that Silves was a
fairly common surname in the region. Since this had been a Roman city I
wonder if it had been called Silvius originally, since that is the Roman
form of the name. Has anyone heard about this place, or have any
information on it?
Just thought you all might be interested in this.
