In reply to the Simmons of Bienville Parish, Lousiana (1850) my ancestors,
James Hardeman Simmons and Susan Johnston Simmons were in Bienville Parish
before and during the civil war. His parents, James Simmons and Malinda Barmore
Simmons were married in South Carolina and moved to Magnolia, Arkansas. James
Hardeman Simmons stayed in Georgia with his grandmother, Lucy Barmore, he later
moved to Bienville Parish. It is told that he had a plantation there and
sold everything before the civil war and worked as an overseer until the war. He
later moved to Crawford County, Arkansas. James Hardeman had an uncle,
Thomas Simmons, who married Malinda Barmore Simmons' sister (I am sorry I can't
remember her name but she was a Barmore).
I do know there was another James Hardeman Simmons in Bienville Parish at the
same time which has caused some major confusion but I do not know how they
are related. Please contact me at if there is a
connection or you want to compare anything.
