Too bad he doesn't have any of the family listed yet-- we'll have to take care
of that!
There were more than a dozen Slaven(s) from Indiana that served in the Civil
War. I'm accumulating the service and pension records from my
ggrandfather's half-brothers who served-- Harvey, Willis, and Milton Slavens
of North Salem, Hendricks Co., IN, and Jesse Slavens of Newton, Jasper
Co., IA. The three from Indiana all enlisted in the 51st Indiana Infantry in
December 1861; WIllis and Milton were discharged for disability in June
1862, and Harvey reportedly died in Nashville at that same time. I'm awaiting
his service record for more information. Jesse served with the 10th Iowa
Infantry from August 1861 through August 1865. He was promoted to
sergeant and was wounded in the leg at Champion Hill, MS.
I'd be happy to share more information with anyone interested.
On a side note, does anyone know the genealogy of Pvt. Samuel Slavens of
Pike Co., OH? He was one of the first six Medal of Honor winners, executed
by the Confederates for his part in the raid into Georgia to steal a train and
destroy track and bridges.
