To Dwayne,
I'm a LANDERS descendant but have a small amount of SMALLWOOD information
as my great-grandfather James Erving LANDERS' first marriage was to Mary B.
Smallwood. They were married 26 Sep 1869 in Athens, McMinn, TN by Wm.
Cooper. She was b. ca. 1852 in MO. She died 23 Nov. 1888 in Douglas Co.,
MO. There were 7 children born to James and Mary.
1. John Thomas Landers, b. 7 Jul 1870 McMinn Co. TN, m. Annie V INGOLD, d.
26 Oct 1962, Okemah, Okfuskee, OK.
*2. Rachel Levi (Levinia, Leva?) Landers, b. 5 Oct 1872 Salem, Dent, MO, m.
Joe GREENLEE
3. James H., b. 28 Mar 1875 Ava, Douglas, MO, m. Narcie MNU
4. Mary Caraline Landers, b. 10 Jun 1877 Ava, Douglas, MO, m. Luther TEDRICK
5. Charles N. Landers, b. 17 Jan 1880 Ava, Douglas, MO
6. George Edward "Griggs" Landers, b. Mar 1881 Ava, Douglas, MO, m. Jenny
VICKERS
*7. Wyoming L. "Oma" Landers, b. 13 May 1884 Ava, Douglas, MO, m. 1st Bill
SCHOLLER - 2nd Charles McKINNEY.
I believe this Mary, mother of the above 7 children could be the Mary A.K.
Smallwood you listed on the 1850 census and her daughters #2 & #7 could be
the heirs mentioned in the will of Thomas, though why those two out of the
seven I wouldn't know. Were there any other names included? Her husband,
James Erving Landers served in the same TN 7th Mounted Infantry as her
brother Thomas N. Smallwood. I already had much of this information as I
have personal contact with this branch of SMALLWOOD/LANDERS in Okemah,
Oklahoma. Much of it was also confirmed by the application for pension
made by James E. Landers. The above 7 children were half-brothers and
sisters to my grandfather and he spoke of them often. He was one of 4
children born to the 2nd wife (Mattie Jane ELLIS) of James Erving Landers.
Are any of your CW records regarding this family from the CSA 19th?. I'm
interested in anything about the LANDERS, MAYNOR, or ELLIS surnames. They
all end for me in MO and TN during the Civil War period. James Erving
Landers fought for the North, but his father died fighting for the South.
My grandfather's telling me of their stories is what got me hooked on this
hobby at an early age. I confirmed his CW tales but can get back no
farther. Any help would be appreciated.
Do you agree this could be your LANDERS, GREENLEE connection? It would be
important for me to be able to finally make this SMALLWOOD connection, as I
have never been able to discover who Mary B. Smallwood's family was.
Another SMALLWOOD researcher told me she definitely could not be the sister
to Thomas N. because of the middle initial being B. instead of A.K. The
will you refer to could maybe outweigh that consideration.
