I am not a DNA expert. However, the Northeastern Smiths DNA Project
has an interest in comparing Y-DNA from males
descended from male Smith ancestors that lived in Connecticut,
Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire,
New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Ohio and providing the results
and relationship probabilities to the members. Members and
non-members can view the Y-DNA markers and comparasons of members who
sign an agreement to allow their data to be included in
the site DNA table. The DNA collected from Smiths is also compared with
DNA results of other projects, since a common ancestor
from a time before surnames were used is possible and also this might
indicate adoption, or other reasons why someone would have
a surname other than that of his biological father.
There are at least two other SMITH projects. You can go to the
Northeastern site for a more detailed explanation at:
http://www.smithconnections.com/index.cgi
A detailed explanation of DNA testing and prices can be found at: http://www.familytreedna.com/
In addition to Y-DNA, they test both sexes for mtDNA and have several other types of tests.
You can also search there for a DNA project for your surname. For instance
Project Goodwin-Godwin has 13 members today and includes surnames Goodwin, Godwin, Goodwinn, Goodwyn, etc.
