Mr. Smith,
Were you trying to say there are few Orville SMITHs or few men named Orville no matter what the surname?
I knew well one Orville who was born in Aug 1902 in the far northern part of North Dakota. My guess is that his
name had nothing to do with Orville WRIGHT. It is true he was NOT a SMITH, nor was he a WRIGHT; but he did
have rather a common surname :-)

Dorothea and anyone else interested in connecting our SMITH ancestors.
I only know of one occurance of "Orville" other than myself.
My father, Earle Louis SMITH born in Milltown, NJ (1903-1957) had a
brother Orville born after
1898, died in infancy. He may have been born after 1903 ("Controlled,
powered flight had seemed
impossible until Orville Wright took off on the 17th December 1903").
This is only a wild guess.
My grandfather, William Edward SMITH, Jr. born in Middlesex County, NJ
(1874-1946).
My great grandfather Charles SMITH, 2nd, born in Philadelphia County, PA
1829, died East Brunswick, NJ 1911.
The names of his parents on his death certificate are Charles SMITH and
Maria.
I have found a Charles Somers Smith b 1798 Philadelphia with spouse
Maria Wilhelmina PALESKE b 1799
Philadelphia, but I am not sure I have the correct family. This family
had a daughter Louisa b. 1821, who
married Lawrence TURNBULL, MD. I have extensive ancestry info on this
family if anyone has use of it.
I also have descendants of Lawrence and Louisa TURNBULL, one of which
is alive and interested in genealogy.

Smith is an extremely challenging surname to research. There is so much
information that turns out to not help us. I believe
we now have a promising new tool, Y-DNA, which eventually will help us
reject data which doesn't match and at some
future time as more SMITHs are tested, we will get a match. It may
appear costly, but what are we willing to spend on
field trips, most of which do not do anything for us? I have not yet
opted to spend for an mtDNA test, but I think I will
eventually do it. Hopefully, I will get some matches so I can convince
some of my cousins to get tested.
