My GGGGrandfather, Joseph Gilpin SMITH born 15 Oct 1801 in Philadelphia, PA.
and married Loreto (Loreta) Miller, born abt 1801 in Mexico. He is the son
of Samuel SMITH & Lydia GILPIN both of PA. She is only known to have a
German and Mexican/Spanish heritage. She spoke no English, and must have
met Joseph during one of his business trips to Mexico. After their
marriage, around 1828, they had eight children. They lived mostly in Mexico
City,and traveled between Mexico City and Philadelphia PA. There are other
family names connected to Joseph, his brother-in-law and business partner
was John STOKES.
In 1848, the Family traveled back to Mexico City and in Oct of that year,
Joseph died.
My GGGrandfather, George SMITH along with two of his brothers, Miguel and
Alban came to California around 1849/1950. They married into the HARTNELL
family. Miguel married Maria Teresa Gregoria HARTNELL in 1851, George
married Maria De La Concepcion Blanca HARTNELL in 1870, and Alban married
Maria Ada HARTNELL about 1870.
Many of the family records up to 1849 are found at Strafford College in PA.
After 1849, records of the three brothers are well documented in California.
Loreto and the other children are believed to have stayed in Mexico,
possibly with her family. The family in California and Mexico did keep in
contact as I have several photos taken in Mexico that date from between
1850's to as late as 1890's.
