Hi Bev,
I wish I could be of help, more help than I think I can be.
1) I have read what you wrote, but what is your question?
a. You gave a timeline, and that is a good thing to do.
b. You gave information from several different censuses, and that is good, too.
2) Have you 'lost' your William H. SMITH?
3) You indicate that he had two wives; but they seem to be from different parents.
Are the two DEAHL men brothers?
4) You indicate that your William was about 6 years old when he immigrated.
Have you located his immigration record/papers? With whom did he come?
Parents? Relatives? Alone? (Surely not alone at age 6.)
You wrote - At some point I believe in was in Stoycetown, Addison Twp. Somerset Co. Pa
You wrote - 1870 William and Eliza are in District 5, Allegany Co Md with son John
and daughter Agatha
5) How certain are you that this was your William H. SMITH?
6) Have you census records for your William H. SMITH in 1850 or 1860 ??
7) You wrote that Eliza was dead, where was she buried?
8) For your William H. SMITH was his age and place (country) of birth in agreement?
My GGGrandfather Robert SMITH up in Butler & Venango counties, PA. from 1840 to 1880 never aged the same each 10 years, maybe because he could not read nor write. In my youth my Grandpa SMITH told many stories, including one about an old man who walked to church and back, sat down in a rocker on the porch, went to sleep, and never woke up. (He had died.) No name was mentioned! About 13 years after my Grandpa SMITH died, I became interested in genealogy. I had no Grandparent, but I have many Aunts and Uncles, I certainly asked a lot of questions of them. My Mom had heard the same story that (my) Grandpa SMITH told me; and she had no name for the man dying in the rocker, either. Don't weep for me, Mom had memories of things which were helpful. Like where her Grandfather's brother, John E. SMITH, lived, although he died there before she was even born.
Do the English use a naming pattern when naming their children?
My Scotch-Irish SMITHs do.
My GGGrandfather named his sons: Robert Black SMITH, John Eakin SMITH, William M. SMITH and my David G. SMITH. John EAKIN was the father of John Eakin SMITH's mother that is quite certain.
Some think that Robert SMITH's mother was Ann MITCHELL, so maybe Ann's father was a William MITCHELL. I have seen no evidence for that.
Robert BLACK, how could he be the father of my GGGrandfather, Robert SMITH? Step-Father perhaps ?? or just a benefactor? Who knows???
John Eakin SMITH had 14 children. The sons had surnames for their middle names.
William M. SMITH seems to have a small family, perhaps only a daughter reached adulthood.
Only my David G. SMITH fits your time frame. He was born in Butler Co., PA. in 1835.
Sorry, I've gone on and on.

Hello all Smith looker uppers
Hope someone can help me out here. I am looking for William H Smith. I
know, like looking for a needle in a haystack. I've been looking for 15 years
for him.
Here is what I know.
William was born either Oct or Dec 1835-39
He was born in England (According to census records)
At some point I believe in was in Stoycetown, Addison Twp Pa
abt 1835 William born England
abt 1841 Elizanne Deahl, first wife born in Addison Twp Pa daughter of
Jacob and Sarah Burke Deahl.
abt 1842 Imm to US age abt 6
abt 1857 Elizabeth Deahl born in addison twp pa 2nd wife, daughter of
Simon and Catharine Slieger Deahl
1866 First son John W born in PA abt 1866
1870 Agatha is born
These are both children of William and Elizanna
1870 William and Eliza are in District 5, Allegany Co Md with son John
and daughter Agatha
1880 Eliza is dead, William is married now to Elizabeth Deahl and
living in Cove, Barbour Co VA (WV)
1900 Family now living in Portland District, Preston Co WV
1909 William dies in Corinth, Preston Co WV
1870 CENSUS
Census > U.S. Census > 1870 United States Federal Census > Maryland >
Allegany > District 4
The 1870 Census show
William H age 31 a farmer b. Eng & renting farm from Van S Creasip
Eliza, age 28 keeping house, and born in Va. (wife)
2 children:
John W ( probably William) age 4 and born in Pa. born Abt 1866
Agatha, 3 months born in Md.
Also listed in the census is
Van S. Creasip age 27 b MD Owner of farm.
Since the oldest child of William and Eliza is 4 in 1880, this would make
the marriage year for William & Eliza about 1875-76.
