Where were your SC Smith's located. I have info. on some in Old Edgefield
Dist, which is the research of others. It did not include any info. on my line
that I know of so far.
I have a gg-grandfather that I am trying to run down. His son, John Westley
Smith was born in 1868, Lexington Co, SC, according to his death cert. So I
assume the Smith I am looking for was born before 1850. That would make him a
possible son of your Absalom Cleveland Smith. According to several sources I
have found:
The father of my proven John Wesley Smith, my g-grandfather, may be John Smith;
however, John Westley's death cert. did not name the father. I went to the SS
office with his RR retirement number, and someone there, with a bad attitude,
said his info. listed his father as John.
His mother is listed as Narcissa, according to the DC of their son. Some
believe he is the John m. Narcissa of the 1880 Greenville Co, Census records
with sons John W. and David. John W.'s birthdate is 4 years off, but that is
not unusal in census records. If he is the right one, he died in 1899, but did
not leave much of a probate record.... it is of no help other than to note from
the wording that he had other children. No names given except John W. Smith,
administrator.
If you have anything on a John Smith of that time period, 1820 - 1870, with a
son John Westley b. 1868, or any possible combination of names, such as John or
Westley alone (taking into consideration spelling error for Wesley), I would
appreciate your sharing. If any of my info. will help, I will be glad to
share.
My grandfather and his family moved to Augusta, Richmond Co, GA after the 1900
census, and my father, as well as (I/me?) were born there too.
Thanks for posting your info. Mary, there is not enought (no loctation or
dates) to begin to check on your Lindsey Smith, but I don't recognize the name.
