Jon SMITH was born in 1810 in South Carolina. He died in 1881 in Houston
County, Texas. He was buried in Old Shady Grove Cemetery, Houston County,
Texas. He was married to Agnes COOPER about 1830 in South Carolina. Jon
fought in the Florida Indian War, which began in 1835. Jon and Agnes moved
to Texas in 1856, settling in Houston County where Jon ran a grist-mill, was
a maker of Ox-bows and a blacksmith. Jon and Agnes had three children all
born in South Carolina; Mathew Castle Pinckney (MCP) Smith (1837 - 1904),
John Texas Smith (1845 - 1928) and one child stillborn around 1847. Both
MCP and John Texas SMITH ended up in Texas close to their father's family.
