I've got stuck on this ancestor who was born around 1780/1790 in Vernham
Dean, Hampshire as is stated in the 1851 census. He married (perhaps) an
Elizabeth Lawrence who was of the same age and possibly from the same town
or county. She was not born in Wiltshire as stated in the 1841 census.
James and Elizabeth was in Marlborough in 1841 with their children (Henry,
John, James, Elizabeth and Mary I think they were called). James was
widowed before the 1851 so the exact place of birth of Elizabeth Lawrence is
unknown. James was a tollmonger/fellmonger by trade.
I have already contacted the Hampshire Record Office but the birth records
for this time period is not complete and he is not listed amongst those that
are there and there were several Smith marriages around his birth year to
even gain a hint as to which were his parents.
Here's hoping..
