Many of the above descendants of John Briant, b. ca 1763, d. ca 1841
Adair Co., KY, are known to have accepted the Briant spelling of their
surname, as Bryant. In each place where the person, themselves, or a
person familiar too these families of Briants, wrote the name, it was
spelled as "Briant". But where written by persons, such as Attorneys,
Court Clerks, or others, either of a different nationality, or unfamiliar
to these Briants, the name was spelled both Briant, and Bryant, until mid
1850's when some of the descendants, accepted the court records, and
other misspellings, as the proper way to spell the name, and consequently
became known as Bryants. It is my considered opinion that the spelling
of the name, in it's original form, indicates geographical origin, such
as Scotland, Ireland, England, etc. While a few of these misspellings
may have been from illiteracy on behalf of the person, I think that more
often, than not, the mispellings can be attributed to the nationality of
the person, other than the subject person, who wrote the name, again,
Preachers, Pastors, Court Clerks, Military Clerks, Land Grant Clerks, and
others.`
