Subject: [SMITH-L] Joseph SMITH, Middletown, CT in 1800's
Date: Sat, 15 Aug 1998 07:29:41 EDT
Is anybody else researching a family of SMITHs who came from Canada (Province
of Quebec) to the US abt. 1860? They were originally from Scotland, then they
went to Canada for perhaps a brief period of time before entering the US and
settling in Middletown, Middlesex Co., CT?
Joseph SMITH came to the US in 1866, was born in 1842 in Canada. He may have
been married to someone named Jane in 1870, or perhaps she was his sister.
About 1872, he married Mary Elizabeth BANNISTER, also from Canada, but her
parents were born in England.
Joseph may have had a brother named Martin. He was living nearby on the 1880
census. They were both joiners. Martin (not sure that's the right name, it
was hard to read - looked like Mawlin). Martin was born in 1840 in Canada,
and he was married to Mary Jane SKINNER. She was also from Canada. Her
mother was Jane SKINNER and she was living with them in 1880; she was born in
Scotland in abt. 1814. Martin's children were Henry (born in Canada abt.
1869); William A. (born in CT abt. 1871); Delia? A.(born in CT about 1873);;
Mary E. (born in CT abt 1875); Addie (born in CT abt. 1877) Charles and
Miriam? twins (born in CT about 1879).
Joseph and Mary Elizabeth's children were Edward Francis (born in CT abt
1875); Mabel (CT abt. 1876); Melville (CT abt 1878, died young); Bertha
(1880); Harry; and Elsie.
It's possible that the father of Martin and Joseph was John SMITH. I found a
John SMITH born in Scotland, living nearby on the census.
Please contact me if any of these names sound familiar. Thanks.
