Bill, some of my major wall-breaking information has come from Civil War
pension applications. You can get a copy of his pension application (if he
or his wife made one), which will give you a world of information. If he
was a Union Civil War soldier, Pension Records are available from the
National Archives <http://www.oz.net/~cindihow/pensions.htm>;. I had both
Union and Confederate soldiers in my ancestry. I have forgotten exactly
who I ordered them from, but I remember I got the Confederate records from
the state where they applied for the pension, which may not be the state
where they served if they had moved to another state before they applied
for the pension.
