Subject: PANAMA CANAL CONSTRUCTION
Date: Sun, 02 Nov 1997 23:44:45 -0800
Many NORCAL/SOCAL members seem to have had individuals who came to CA via
the Isthmus of Panama.
The history channel is going to feature a program on the construction of the
canal on Sunday, November 9th at 8:00pm eastern time and 5:00pm pacific
time. Their annoucement is as follows:
==========================================
Sunday 11/9
8:00/5:00 Modern Marvels. The Panama Canal. Chronicles one of the most
incredible engineering feats of all time--the construction of the 51-mile
canal that took 10 years to build and employed over 40,000 workers--6,000 of
whom died of yellow fever, malaria, and other horrors. An earlier, nine-year
French attempt to build the canal ended in failure and cost 20,000 lives.

One would think that the first part of the program might well have
information on how the isthmus was crossed before the canal was started,
possibly covering both road and railroad travel.
Regards and good luck,
