How can I get a copy of someone else's driver license, ID card, vehicle or
vessel record?

Vehicle, vessel, driver license and identification (ID) card records are open
to public inspection. Confidential information, such as social security
numbers and residence addresses, may only be disclosed to a court or law
enforcement agency when they are authorized by a specific federal or state
statute.

To request information, complete a Vehicle/Vessel Registration Information
Request form INF 70-R/2 for a vehicle or vessel record or a Driver
License/Identifcation Card Record Request form INF 70-D/2 for a driver
license or ID card record. Mail your request with the appropriate fees ($5
per request) to:

Department of Motor Vehicles
Office of Information Services
Public Operations, Unit-G199
P. O. BOX 944247
Sacramento, California 94244-2470.

How can I use DMV's message forwarding service to locate someone?

If you are trying to locate a lost relative or friend, who lives in
California, DMV's message forwarding service may assist you. There is a
nonrefundable fee of $5 for this service, and here is how it works:

You complete a Message Forwarding Service form INF 1211B. DMV will forward
the message you wrote, if a positive match is found on the database. The
response by the recipient is strictly voluntary. The department reserves the
right to review the message for content and to reject any message that, in
the opinion of the department, appears to be contrary to public interest.
Rejected messages will be returned to the requester.
