David,
>>I have just read that the S of G has a one name listing of GRO entries
catalogued in booklet 117[a].<<
If you can let me know where you learned of this information and what the
booklet is called I will try and locate it when I am up there tomorrow.
>>Secondly although I have a bookshop catalogue and a Publications list how
can anyone, other than through experience, know what is contained in the
library.<<
By visiting the Society and looking through the card index. Cards are
filed in several categories - I am not sure of all of them, but there are
filed by county, with sections on General books which pertain to the whole
county, Local books which are specific to parishes or locations, Parish
Registers (transcripts and copies), Censuses, MIs, Directories and
Periodicals. The books are all numbered and lettered and the sections are
in the same order on the shelves.
>>Is there a catalogue?<<
This is the large card index I am talking about, in the Middle library
adjacent to the desk.
>> Would this be something that would eventually go on-line? <<
Cataloguing of Library acquisitions began on computer in 1990 and
everything acquired since then is on computer. The Society began in 1911
and from then until 1990, all acquisitions are on cards in the card index
(this includes card printed from the computer cataloguing). A year ago
last April, we got a Lottery grant to employ three people for three years
to input the cards up to 1990 onto computer. Everything that has been
input so far is available for computer search at the Society. There are at
present two OPAC's, one in the microfiche room and one in the Upper Library
which members can consult with no formalities. Plans are afoot to install
at least two more OPACs in the Middle Library in the near future.
The whole project is to take three years and once it is complete, it is
planned to make it available for searching on the Internet.
Are you in contact with John Holland ()? I don't
know where his Hollands come from.
