I am reading with interest the suggestions concerning keeping track of what
to do next etc. as I have been very hap hazard with my methods.
However, I do have a system of recording where I have searched, as like
others, I sometimes have realised that I have searched something before.
I have made a simple database (use Works for Windows) with the following
columns;
surname, name of document, year and vol.no. if applicable, author or
organisation e.g.CFHS.,location(where I actually used it, LDS or Public
Library etc), medium ( I use abbreviations fic,fil or bk) and a final column
(blank if found info, or nr for no result)
In hindsight ( a wonderful gift) I should have also entered the date I used
the source, but will in future.
I have the dbase set to sort alpha by surname, so all my Arabins are
together, and secondly to sort the docs alpha within the surname list.
I keep a printout of the database at the front of my ringbinder that I take
out to do research.
I have a second database in the same folder with all my "stray" Arabins that
I have found, and when I have more information to link them to my family
tree, I remove them from the database.
