I agree with your comments, but would point out that this cuts both ways.
As the SoG becomes better-linked with its distant members, so it becomes
increasingly easy for them to take part in appropriate volunteer activity
(e.g. concerning indexing and transcribing) that previously was only
feasible for London-based members.
The Norfolk FHS, for example, in fact has set up an Internet branch, in
order to further these two forms of interaction between the society and its
members.
