I do not think you would be wise to rely on them being father and son. I
know it's not a parish register but let me quote from the Wakefield Court
Rolls of 29th April 1647
Jurors present that:
Godfrey Linley of Woodhouse and Thomas Hinchcliffe made affray between
themselves. Fined 3s 4d [superscript, 20d each]
Thomas Linley made affray and drew blood from Nicholas Coldwell. Fine 10s.
Godfrey Linley senior of Hepworth, Godfrey Linley his son, John Linley,
James Linley, Godfrey Linley, John Battie, Godfrey Battie, John
Litlewood, Richard Hinchcliffe, John Litlewood of Feildend, John
Armitage and John Butterworth made affray and drew blood amongst
themselves. Fine l0s.
That lot caused me no end of problems in sorting out. In the third
paragraph Godfrey Linley is obviously senior to his son but there would
be no need to use the word 'senior' after the father's name except for
the other Godfrey further along the list. That Godfrey was born 1592 and
was third cousin to Godfrey senior who was born 1583. The Godfrey Linley
[of Woodhouse] mentioned in the third paragraph is a different one
altogether.
There are instances in the Rolls where the term distinguishes father and
son but I think it would be unwise to merely accept it without other
evidence.
