Hi Sandra,
I couldn't find any reference to Holingate or even anything similar to that
in the Geographers' A-Z of Great Britain either. The book is 3 miles to 1
inch, so has most small villages on it, and is well indexed.
I checked Foulkes in the 1851 census CD of DEV, WAR, NFK and found only a 1
month old John Foulkes born in London, though he was living in Birmingham.
There was no Hannah listed in that census.
I did however manage to find a Hole Gate by querying the census data that is
in Dunsford St Thomas, Devonshire; and also Holt Gate House, -Census Place:
Warkleigh & Satterleigh South Molton, Devonshire. These were found by a
query of Hol & Gate and produced 91 records where these combinations
appeared e.g. Mr Holcome a Gate keeper or Mr Athol at Bishops Gate (names
fabricated) - it is a pretty powerful search, but of course limited to those
people living in those three counties at the time, wherever they may be
born. The above two were the only combination of hol & Gate on one line
You need to get back to Lyndell and ask where the reference was found - it
may give a clue as to whether the address is a house name or a place name,
in which time period, and which county.
Hope that helps
Pickard
