Peter,

Another possible explanation regarding the 'vanished' husband is that he
had been transported to Australia as a convict. Therefore the wife would
be married but would not expect to see her husband again. I don't know
what provision the law made in such circumstances, - I am sure that
somebody will know. The fact that the father was named does seem to
imply that the clergyman accepted and knew of the relationship.

You didn't say where this occurred, but a look at the relevant local Assize
records might give a clue, if the records exist at the County Record
Office.
