One of the reasons I prefer it to its distant cousin of the propelling
branch of the family, is that it is much more robust and has a
substantially thicker lead. If you have hands the size of mine it's
very easy to break the lead in propelling pencils with monotonous
regularity.
There is another branch of the family that emigrated to the US and
developed there. This has several short thick leads in sections that
lock together. Put one in the top of the pencil and another pops into
place at the writing end. Mine advertises the Chicago Bears, but then as
a practical masochist I'm a/the Nottingham Forest supporter too....
