Subject: [SOG-UK-L] Pencils - caps and erasers

Re the very interesting thread on the late lamented pencil cap, is it still
possible to obtain the rubber eraser that slips over the end of the standard
pencil ? I recall they were extremely useful especially when one wanted to
place said pencil behind the ear. This I used to find extremely useful whilst
roaming around through card indexes and with notepad placed on one side a
trusty pencil behind the ear was a boon.
Alas, the modern plastic versions of propelling pencil which have been
mentioned do not comfortably fit behind the ear without slipping , especially
when climbing the stairs at the SoG. Also a sudden movment of the head when
scanning through a volume often causes the pencil to slip and land
precariously on the precious book. They are however fitted with a plastic clip
to fit into one's jacket pocket, but I prefer generally to move around without
the encumberance of jacket whilst researching.
Moreover, the metal caps referred to earlier did not assist in this regard
either, since they would lead to a cold sensation on the front of the forehead
when pencil was worn behind the ear.
In conclusion, the metal cap although very handy for keeping the tip in good
sharp order was I believe more useful when pencils were stored in a pencil
case. Perhaps the SoG bookshop should consider stocking an assortment of
metal caps and various shapes of slip on erasers and offer a fitting service
at the bookshop in order that visitors can choose the best combination for a
snug fit behind the ear.
Oh yes, what grade of lead do people feel most comfortable with ? I usually
plump for the trusty HB .
