Hi all,

Many thnaks to all those who answered my query concerning
the medical term"softening of the brain".

I think I have now found the answer. In another document at the PRO
I found that this particular male ancestor had been diagnosed as suffering
from alcoholism, and that a few years before his medical discharge from
the army
he was demoted for being drunk on duty.

Also a distant cousin says that she remembers being told by the sister
of the mans wife that the wife suffered from drunken violent abuse.

As they say alcohol addles the brain.
