Dave,
Wm. Cory & Co. were, and I far as I am aware, still are, in the haulage
business, but specialising in Thames lighters, carrying coal and such
and, for a large part of this century anyway, hauling refuse from the
London riverside transfer depots to the landfill sites where it was, and
still is, tipped. These were in Essex, where the marshes were being
reclaimed. I think I've seen lorries on the roads recently with their
name on them, mainly again coaling (or probably these days, coking).
And I believe I've also seen coal retail shops with the name over the
door, but don't hold me to that.
Of course, this may not be your Cory at all, but I'm fairly confident it
is.
