Subject: [SOG-UK-L] Submission of Data on Disc
Date: Fri, 6 Aug 1999 03:27:49 -0400
It would appear I was not entirely correct about the formats for submission
of data on disc which I posted yesterday. I missed part of a meeting and
have had it pointed out that DBF format was changed to CSV (comma separated
values) for database and spreadsheet files.
Thanks to Barney for his contribution on the subject, but obviously there
may be issues we haven't discussed so if you have suggestions or
observations, I will mention them at the next meeting.
We did consider HTML, but as Barney says, you can quite easily convert what
you download (when it is available) to any format you like once you have
the raw data.
And yes, this also applies to CDs, though of course, if you already have a
CD in your own formats, I think I can say it will still be accepted as long
as it also has the data in one of the three formats we require to index and
present it easily.
As to ASCII, we chose RTF so that formatting of the page would be
retained in case the item was to be printed out. Everything we discussed
and decided was to save time and work for staff and volunteers and to use
the Society's limited resources as economically as possible.
Of course there will always be exceptions - for example where someone dies
and their discs are passed on to the Society, but this is where we may come
to you for help. We will be asking at a later stage for volunteers to
reformat some of the material we already have and may need help in the
future in recognising some of the native formats on the discs received in
this way.
I hope this has clarified a few points from yesterday's posts.
