Subject: [SOG-UK-L] Census Abbreviations

On another list to which I subscribe I have recently answered questions
about abbreviations in the 1881 census [on CD] suffixed to occupations,
such as Groom 'D' and Coachman 'ND' which I was able to explain as
Domestic and Not Domestic with the background to these.
I have now been asked to define Coachman A&M which was found in London in
the Greenwich/ Blackheath area.
My own suspicion is that it is the initials of the name of the company or
business for which he was coachman, have any of you a better idea or an
idea for the company?
I also found
Shopman (G)
Ostler 8
Coachman 22/3
Coachman 6/2
and a couple of dozen in Greenwich with Gardener 7/3
These last items look like dates, so perhaps the date that they stopped or
started work. Somebody must have employed a lot of gardeners if they all
represent starting dates. Any ideas?
Regards
Geof
