Hi Everyone

As you will all know we have had a major problem with our bookshop, I am
pleased to say it is now back and functioning properly, I wont go into the
problem in depth, but it was caused by a full stop being in the wrong place!
This was there since the beginning but was only picked up when we changed to
weight based shipping cost and it was then very difficult to remove. Anyway
good things have come out of it, we now have an upgraded version of the
software which enables a few improvements, best of all that I can see is an
ability to go straight from adding a product to your cart to the checkout,
making it easier to buy single items. We are still working our way through
weighing the bookshop, there is a lot still at default but in time the
postage costs should become fairer. If anyone has any comments on this new
system please let me know, thanks.

An Archivist Writes:
I hardly need say to this august audience many genealogists now keep track
of their research using one or more of the various family history software
packages or indeed in a database or word processor program. The Society is
happy to take in your researches on computer disc. Indeed through the
auspices of the Computer Committee we have been taking small numbers of
discs, mainly comprising small databases of monumental inscriptions and the
like or copies of people's research, for a number of years now. From 1
January the Society is beginning to actively promote the service. We hope
to build up this material into a resource as valuable as the special and
document collections are at present.
We ask potential donors to sign a similar agreement regarding the deposit of
disks similar to that for the other collections. Copies of which are
available from Else Churchill or myself.
There are various dos and don'ts which will help us to make your discs
quickly available. They include:
1. - clearly labelling each disc with your name, the software program and
what it contains (including date and geographical location), ie Simon
Fowler Family Tree Maker v3 Belcher pedigree 1680-1880 Leicestershire.
2 - submitting3.5 inch discs using a PC standard format (ie MS-DOS) Word
processor files should be in ASCII or Rich Text Formats, Database files in
ASCII comma/tab separated format or, for family history software packages,
GEDCOM version 4 or higher. Spreadsheet files are not usually accepted.
3 - including some hard copy text explaining what is on the disc(s),
including details of: field names and order, non-standard GEDCOM tags, and
an explanation of non-standard codes and abbreviations used.
I should stress that we are unable to take material which has been
downloaded from the Internet or other sources. In addition we ask donors to
delete the details of anybody still living from databases and the like. Oh,
and before depositing discs you must make sure you read back these discs to
ensure that they have been correctly copied and virus free.
A simple leaflet is available from me explaining in more detail how the
Society would like the files. It also contains a copy of the copyright
waver.

Simon Fowler
