When it was announced that the P.R.O. would be seeking a commercial
undertaking to transcribe the census, my first thought was to wonder why it
could not be done in the same way as the 1881 transcription.
Then I thought, of course it has to be ready by the beginning of 2002, and
until then it is confidential. Obviously the P.R.O. cannot let an army of
volunteers loose on it, but needs to be able to exercise some control
within the Official Secrets Act.
Then I saw the announcement about who would be doing it. No danger of
misconduct with that fine body of workers, is there?
