Subject: [SOG] Howard Staunton

Few people showed interest in this topic, but, to report back, I looked at
the will of the 5th Earl of Carlisle (1825), and found no mention of
Howard Staunton, only legitimate children and servants, notably William
Knight.
This seems to belie the D.N.B.'s account of Staunton, which says that he
was reputed to be an illegitimate son of the Earl and that he received a few
thousand pounds under his father's will.
Sue Turner, please note: sorry, but no-one by the name of Havenhand in this
will! I have a photocopy, in case you have further queries.
Next, I plan to look at Staunton's marriage at Brighton in 1849. I also
hope to find him on the 1861 census at Streatham.
Regards,
John Townsend (Wokingham)
