Hi All
I am trying to trace information relating to a merchant ship
called St John Baptist upon which a possible ancestor (John Haggerston)
was arrested off the Scilly Islands for murder in March 1747.
Apparently, he had stuck a fellow matelot across the head with a
handspike. He was referred to as a 'pyrate' in the Gentlemans Magazine
when he died in Newgate in November 1753 (after having been acquitted in
February 1752!)
Does anyone know of a useful source of information for merchant ships
for that period? Also does anyone know if records for Newgate prison and
the Marshalsea exist?
Regards
