Hello Ruth
Since Giles is a surname too, it is quite likely that Jane was named after a
relative, friend, or godparent. The name could have come from several
generations back if it was a family one; for example, I have a cousin with
the middle name Dixon, named after his great-grandfather Thomas Dixon Brown
whose mother was a Dixon. In another branch of the family in the early 19th
c., one poor boy got the names William Cooper Butterfint Newrick, named after
his mother's brother William Cooper Butterfint, who had been named after his
mother, a Cooper. I am descended from one of WCBN's younger brothers,
Charles Chicken Newrick. Although I know their family tree back several
generations more, I have not found any Chickens in it (sadly - I so wanted to
say I was descended from Chickens!). Charles was christened just after the
family moved from East Anglia to the North-East of England and I think they
may have had friends called Chicken there. I am grateful for their bizarre
choice of name for I think there has only ever been one Charles Chicken
Newrick, so it is easy to spot him. As an aside, Charles had a descendant
called John Salmon Newrick, so I am on the way to collecting a 3-course meal.
Just looking for William Chocolate-Fudgecake Newrick now!?!
Jane
