Subject: [SOG] Margaret Nicholson's letter

I have read Barney's message about Margaret Nicholson's letter
in GM. I suspect her view will get little sympathy from this list, but, as
she
does not have a computer with which to defend herself, here are a few
words in her support.
Clearly, some, including Margaret, view the facility to review recent
library
acquisitions in GM as an unalienable right of membership. Who are we
to take away a privilege which has been enjoyed for many years? That
would be a case of technology being used to take a backwards step, whereas
it should be utilised to improve benefits for the membership as a whole.
Regarding the deficit of 43,000 GBP, if this is seen as too much, then the
Society
should first aim to reduce it by better overall management of GM, at least
until such time as further reductions were deemed to be no longer
achievable.
More advertising might be one way. Taking away a facility which many
members
value in order to save the Society money sounds like a last resort. You
might as
well suggest cancelling GM altogether - which would entail an even bigger
saving!
- but the point, surely, is that members are looking for more benefits, not
less.
Good to hear from you, Barney, even though I don't agree with you!
With best wishes,
John Townsend (Wokingham)
