Thanks Steve and all of you who have added to this string, for your
patience.
I find that I not only use, but also look for 'emoticoms' in posts. They do
help in understanding where someone is coming from 'thought wise'.
As I read back I see that I perhaps wasn't clear enough in pointing out
that I had been Emailing someone from Australia when this came up and so, I
assumed that was the source of the expression, which would then have had a
common English etymology as in UK-English instead of the American-English
(these terms used by Corel /Word-Perfect etc), and so would not be as
readily found in a US-published (North American) dictionary which is the
only one I have at hand.
As for the expression, It's not going to be one that I use. <Grin>
When I first learned that the opposite of 'chuffed' was 'chuffed', I
realized I was in trouble. It's quite an expression however, and the
meaning is obviously not easily solved although it's been interesting.
I've also realized that one shouldn't designate an expression to a country
at all. Regional differences having their part to play in that beyond the
more obvious national ones - something I should realize well enough coming
from a "not too small" <g> and bilingual country of more regions and
ethnic backgrounds than I can count!
It shows me how important it is to keep in mind the many different
influences that shape how we see or hear things and ultimately, our
expressions (not to mention spelling differences) and understanding. We may
be using the same root language, but that's about the extent of it. It's
good perhaps to be reminded of that from time to time.
There is a term that is actually genealogical in nature that I would like
to throw out to this group while everyone has their dictionaries open <g>
but I'll send it under a new header and after the impending rainstorms have
passed.
Regards,
