Barney Tyrwhitt-Drake suggests:
>1) Pass a motion at the AGM next month that there will be a one-off
>single charge of 10 pounds for all membership renewals in Jan 2002 and
>that this sum of money and later interest it earns will be ring-fenced
>for premises enlargement or digitisation, and will be reported on
>separately in all annual accounts.

If it were felt that an extra contribution from members in one form or
another might be needed, it would be a good idea to raise the subject at the
A.G.M. in the interests of keeping people in the picture. But I think a
motion such as Barney's (above) would need to have clearer objectives.
After all, "premises enlargement" and "digitisation" are two entirely
different aims, and members might not know which way to vote. They might
prefer other options. This is a good reason for having the user opinion
survey which we have talked about, as it would establish what services
members really want. Management might then seek extra revenue, if it felt
that necessary, with a clearer plan in view, and, therefore, much sounder
justification,

As things stand, it is not clear to me what criteria the executive uses to
gauge the level of demand for different services.

Best wishes,

John Townsend
