Between them they have provided a possible solution. The "(HOE:Lts)" could
refer to instructions given to the mason, i.e Headstone with Old English
Letters, and this has accidentally been inscribed on the stone. I like
it.<<
THAT reminds me of the story about an old Yorkshireman who was widowed and
he asked the stonemason to put on his late wife's headstone the
inscription, "Lord, she was Thine." When he went to view the grave, he was
horrified to discover the mason had made an error and it read, "Lord, she
was Thin".
"Nay, nay, lad," the Yorkshireman remonstrated with the stonemason, "tha's
gone and left an E off."
The mason was full of profuse apologies and assured the customer the
inscription would be corrected. Next day, the Yorkshireman went again to
see his wife's headstone. This time, it read.....
E, LORD, SHE WAS THIN
With deep and humble apologies for inflicting that on you!

Never ask a man if he comes from Yorkshire. If he does he will tell you. If
he does not, why humiliate him? - Canon Sydney Smith
