I have two references (one an obituary from 1924) which state that the
deceased was
(a) 3 years in a band of the Royal Marines, winning the Queens Silver
medal as a first class musician
and another as an unaccredited reference in a book
(b) He was at the School of Military Music and bandmaster of the volunteer
cadets
I presume these are both the same place, but can anyone tell me where this
was likely to be? How old would a boy have been before he could join the
school/left it? And if records exist would they be with the Royal Marine
records at the PRO?
The class guides to the Royal Marine records at Kew, don't give much away re
musicians, and I am trying to avoid having to check all the depots on spec.
The period he would have been at the School is probably during the 1860's.
(based on the fact that he was born in London in 1853, appeared on stage at
Drury Lane in 1861 aged 8 and married in 1874 -and was not in the marines
then)
Thanks
