I have been unable to discover my Great-Grandfather, WILLIAM WALTER
JONES's date of birth.

He was in the Royal Welch Fusiliers from 1879 - 1897. Rank on discharge
Sgt Major. Service numbers 2225 and 2216. His service records give his
age when he enlisted as 24 which would make his date of birth between
1853 & 1855 and his place of birth as Liverpool. Unfortunately army
records at this time are not always accurate. He is buried in Fulham
but I understand there is no stone on his grave and until I come to the
UK I cannot confirm this.

William Jones is a common name and so far I have had no luck with
FreeBMD or the ONS. Would anyone know where I might obtain a date of
birth for an individual born in the middle of the 19c? Would there be
anything in the Official Army List or the Army Pension records at Kew or
perhaps there are other records held by the SOG that I might refer to?

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Regards,

Roger Jones
