Geoff wondered about the origin of the name TOLSON. According to the Oxford
Names Companion, it is a patronymic derived from TOWLE which is cognate with
the Middle English and Old English TOLL and/or the Old Norse TOLI.

It seems therefore that Geoff's assumption of its origin is right.

Sorry not to have responded to this earlier; I have been on half-term Grandpa
duty.
