I am no expert at retail sales but couldn't the bookshop have been let out to
someone who would have been prepared to put the time and energy into making the
bookshop a profitable enterprise. I should imagine that there would be
somewhere in London a specialist bookstore who would have been prepared to take
over the business in exchange for rental. The bookshop mailing list alone must
be worth money to an enterprising businessman/woman.
