I am astounded that some members, even non-members if transcripts of
lectures were published on the SOG site, consider they should receive such
without charge
Those who are fortunate to be able to attend, pay a fee, in addition to
their annual membership.
Living far away I seldom can attend.
I assume if given by a member of SOG staff any material is the
property/copywite of SOG.
Therefore if the Society is in a position to publish, if considered
appropriate, then there should be a charge for the benefit of the Society.
Any lecture by a lecturer other than staff member, no doubt paid a fee by
the Society, either the Society then acquires the material and are free to
publish, or the lecturer is free to publish when the Society might in it's
wisdom purchase and offer to members.
Having said this I agree with the point made by several, unless taped and
later transcribed unlikely to be available, as it is unlikely a lecturer is
reading from a set script but using bullet points.
It is the only way if one is to address the audience, not the lectern then
to look up and find an empty room or maybe just sleeping figures.
No lecturer I know of has to my knowledge ever agreed to taping and
transcription unless properly organised and they having a final say on the
to be published transcription. Then likely to be an additional fee.
As an entirely independent body the Society can only exist and widen the
benefits it provides if adequate income is available to invest in such.
Whilst so much is free, covered by the annual membership fee, it must be
realistic for sensible commercial practices to be applied, if it will
produce a margin over costs.
The alternative I suppose to meet such 'demands' would be an increase in
the annual membership, fee.
Not something I would personally subscribe too.
