As GENUKI maintainer for London, Middlesex and Wiltshire I support this
proposal. I add links to church photos as I come across them, which happens
sometimes as a mention in a mailing list, sometimes when I am googling for
information on a particular parish or church. But I am sure there are many
I have not come across. Someone systematically looking for them and
maintaining pages of links would be welcome.
I followed up some of the links mentioned in answers to Phil's message, and
the results may help in designing a site.
Several links from the referenced pages came up as "File not found". In
deciding how to maintain your site, you need to include a way of checking
regularly for broken links. In GENUKI we have a regular spider run which
looks for broken links, and there are always a few pages oncounties I
maintain which have moved or disappeared since the last run.
You need to decide how to allocate border parishes to counties. Richard's
Church Albums under Wiltshire includes Woodchester - which is well within
in Gloucestershire. I think this is a mistake, but there are also parishes
which have changed counties. In GENUKI we use the list from the Phillimore
Atlas and Index of Parish Registers with occasional cross references, e.g.
Kingswood (by Wotton under Edge) was a detached part of Wiltshire but was
transferred to Gloucestershire.
Some sites with church photos have other buildings as well - e.g.
http://www.astoft.co.uk/arch/ -
http://www.tyburnconvent.org.uk/history.html on my IE5 browser is a
"blackwash" - a completely black page with no visible information - and I
find I quite often have to contact webmasters to tell them of problems in
their pages - and I usually get thanked by them. (Though sometimes they are
very proud of the advanced facilities they have used in constructing their
web pages, and tell me I should get the latest flash software or similar.)
As you have been told about a number of sites which do have links to church
photos - you need to decide on a particular focus for your site.

David Hawgood.
