Thanks for the quick response.
The CUST records I've looked at personally are in the CUST 28, CUST
47, and CUST 64 series. (I've only managed a few days at the PRO over
the last few years, but plan on making a more protracted visit now
one of our sons has a flat not too far away!)
From a thesis "A Maritime History of the Ports of Barnstaple and
Bideford" I learnt that the outport records (CUST 69) for the
Clovelly area are lost.
I've not tried CUST 119 - or the Treasury Correspondence - thanks for
the tip. And as you say, the search you suggested has given me some
more possibilities.
