Dear Joan
I'm churchwarden of a church which has held an All Souls Day service for
bereaved families for the last 3 years - and it's growing in popularity.
It's a quiet eucharist, with the names read out an acknowledgement of
grief and doubt, but then the recognition of the mystery of Easter in
the service. We have a gathering for refreshments afterwards, and it is
a wonderful occasion where people support each other and are able to say
the things that perhaps they cannot normally as they feel people expect
them to be "over it by now". Spooky is the one thing it ain't!
I too remember Hallowe'en parties in the north, but they don't seem to
happen now. But I love it when the neighbourhood kids come round and
"scare" us with silly faces, and are bought off with sweets or an
orange. Mind you - we know the neighbourhood kids, so I spose it makes a
difference!

OK then, here's something I have been pondering in connection with
Halloween. My husband's brother died last November and his lady wife
has
invited us all to a Service for the Dead this evening. I am of the
Methodist persuasion and the Service all seems a bit spooky to me, and,
as I
am not a regular church attendee, hesitate to do anything hypocritical.
This is All Soul's Eve, I believe, where a list of the dead will be read
out. As a family history researcher isn't this what we are doing? i.e.
searching for records of dead people.
What connection does it have with the egg thrown at our front door last
evening while we were out, presumably by trick-or-treat children? By the
way, I am not a kill-joy, the Grandchildren hollowed out a pumpkin
during
half-term and it was in full view in our front window. I might add that
they do not live with us and were not permitted by their parents to go
out
trick or treating themselves.
Just a thought,
Joan
