Billy Walker, I know enough about the SOUNDEX codes to make me
dangerous. If you want to learn more about that method for a record
index system, go to this URL:

There you will find two pages of URL's on SOUNDEX. You will find
several links to Soundex Converters and Searchers, "What is Soundex?"
are a couple of examples.

For certain, if you spend some time with those URL's, you will know if
those surnames that you mention have the same SOUNDEX code. For
example, "The Soundex Machine", is the URL for National Archives
explanation of their system.

As many know from last year, I spent considerable effort finding the
identity of my ggg-grandmother, whose name had been recorded wrongly for
some 112 years after her death. I won't rehash that now. At any rate, her
obituary records her name as SHUNE, while Saylor recorded it as SHANKS.
Yesterday I viewed LDS Microfiche for SHUNE, and, guess what, it referred
me to SCHNECK. Well, right in the middle of that page was the following
entry which, I believe, "may" be the information I'm looking for:

SHANKS, CATHERINE, b. 1819, Somerset Co. Parents were identified as James
Shanks and Christiana Helwig. My Catherine's obituary identified her as
born in Somerset County in 1819.

I'm not very knowledgable yet about soundex: Are SHUNE, SHUNK, SHANK,
SHENK, SCHNECK, SCHWENK, etc., variations on the same name? And, does
anyone have any information on the above marriage and their offspring?
